16 BAR MYTHICAL CITY
by Cornershop of Daydreams

16-BAR MYTHICAL CITY is a project made in collaboration with De Stroate, a community that nurtures youth culture and local hiphop. A crucial entity for countercultural currents in Kortrijk, De Stroate hosts a hiphop academy, street art museum, open performances, cafe, as well as a network of mutual support. Fighting to protect its existence and message of non-hierarchical collectivity, you may soon find it on the move. As we know it, Stroate welcomed us to its found home between the ornate and silent historical Begijnhof and Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Kerk. It was a refreshing mutation, a sonic rapture that hits as you turn the corner, an infectious bass that travels through your body.

In the MYTHICAL CITY constructed, we use music from artists associated with De Stroate as a medium for entering the speculative mental space in a collective setting. Voices of resistance and union trigger the imagination. The furnitures designed aim to transform this energy into space to be touched and connected with. The MYTHICAL CITY consists of unruly fragments from teenage bedrooms, the places where we first dared to dream. They conjure rebellion, secrets, mayhem. These are sites in which nothing and everything seems possible, full of chaotic, impassioned and often contradictory dreaming. We may be tempted to confide in the others here, to resolve our thoughts. Hanging out in these strange furnitures can be cosy but a little anxious, stirred by the music to refuse repetition of a daily that does not work for us.

This project is realised during the residency programme in Kortrijk by Designregio
The Cornershop of Daydreams is an artist group consisting of Ila Colley, Yan Liang, and Metincan Guzel.
